Carissa pretended to play the piano at age 2, sitting in
front of it and banging out horrendous sounds (which she has vastly
improved since!) She later studied music and science in college, earning a degree as a musical mad scientist! Previously she had incarnations with the rock band Woven Hearts and Irish-music band Celtic Knot. Needing a guitarist in the group, she placed an ad and Lance answered it. She immediately put him to work, then married him two years later. She later recruited fellow Celtic Knothead Karin Lyle to play in her group "Gypsy Bandwagon", the one whose website you are currently looking at. (?) Carissa's piano work is as stunning as her fiddle playing. The sassiest member of the band, her laughter is in an unknown key...... |
Lance spent his entire childhood roaming all over the west,
making his roots about as shallow as a cactus in a flash-flood riverbed... Always the adventurer, his desert treks and mountain explorations have led to beautiful and remote locales, but no songwriting acclaim.... Not understanding that his music career will never take off from performances in empty campgrounds, he remains befuddled at his current state of obscurity. He did play with several moderately unsuccessful bands in the 80s, but spent all his money on hiking and skiing addictions. Later moved to the Great Smoky Mountains and answered Carissa's ad for a moody, Irish guitarist. She got the guitarist - he got a wife! Most guitars fear his strange, overly-aggressive technique... |
Karin began her music career while just a child playing
songs off the radio on a toy organ. Her parents saw that she had
talent and that more expensive instrument purchases would be in their
future. Soon she left the comfy confines of Chicago to marry, moved to North Carolina and become a music teacher. She worked in the family's shop and learned to play 22 instruments. (How many more she will master is presently unknown....) When she is not playing music, she is teaching music. When she is not teaching music, she is rescuing stray animals and baking fattening nordic dishes. She is the author of a number of music instruction books, and has performed on many music recordings. Known for her overuse of the letters j and q. (see CD liner notes.....) |
Uncle Biscuit grew up in the mountains of western North
Carolina, spending his childhood emulating various comic book characters
and musical groups. (his reasons for this are still unknown....) Formed the band "The Chimpanzees" with his two older brothers at age seven. Unfortunately, the band did not pass the test of time..... He then abandoned his promising music career to pursue art. In the 80s, his comic strip featuring Todd Rundgren's band Utopia helped land him a fan and a wife. (see previous column) Besides playing with Gypsy Bandwagon, Uncle Biscuit (aka James Lyle) is a professional cartoonist and artist. His work has been published in comic books and magazines here and abroad. His onstage comedy has been known to cause temporary disorientation... |

There were big challenges facing them when they started out: |
| First they had to find fast, spirited donkeys.... |

And some of their first performances were not well-received...
| Sometimes they would spend years on the road just to play one show! |

Today, they are still on the road! Here is Carissa searching for the theater her manager promised she would play at!
| A typical grazing Gypsy Bandwagon fan! |
